Semester Final Exam-Reflection

1. This semester, in video class, I have made a PSA, a news story, two feature stories (Book and Boy Scouts), and a sports story for our own onw now.

PSA-

• I made this video with Jack Clayton
• A challenge was trying to record on the stairs
• This took about a week from thinking of it to editing and submission
• I learned how to use the cameras and how to edit with premiere.
• I would make better shots leading up to the fall
• I was happy with the final outcome

News story-

• This is a video about Jack Claytons summer
• This took about a week from thinking of it to editing and submission
• This was my first interview so it was challenging to interview Jack
• Next time I would get more b-role
• I learned more about how to use the cameras and how to edit with premiere

Book feature story-

• I made this video about the book Reece is writing
• This took about a week from thinking of it to editing and submission
• It was challenging to find a topic for the video
• I learned more about how to use the cameras and how to edit with premiere
• I would interview the teacher who was helping Reece write his book
• I liked it, but it could have been better

Boy Scouts feature story-

• I made this video about the Boy Scouts of America
• This took about a week from thinking of it to editing and submission
• It was challenging to find time to interview who I wanted and to get good responses
• I learned more about how to use the cameras and how to edit with premiere
• I would get more b-role, interview someone else and revise it overall
• I wasn't a huge fan of the finished project

Sophomore Basketball-

• I made this video about the ONW Sophomore basketball team
• This took about a week from thinking of it to editing and submission
• A challenge was finding a time when we could record the game
• I learned more about how to use the cameras and how to edit with premiere.
• I liked it because we created our own ONW NOW in the studio and I worked with a partner

2. I used my class time wisely by working on and planning my projects. If I finished early, I would work on improving my video skills and other classwork. I came into class before school several times to finish my project.

3. My strengths are writing interview questions and parts of editing. I maximized my strengths by, when working with a partner, doing what I was good at and letting him use his strengths.

4. I need to improve with coming up with the premise of videos and with advanced editing. I have gotten help from others in class who know what to do and they teach me.

5. I learned how to use the programs. I also have an appreciation for what went into every video, tv show, and movie I watch. I am always thinking of how they got a certain shot and how the different rules are used. Next semester I hope that I can enjoy creating the projects more. I will also create a plan and schedule for every video. I have grown in my project management and communication skills.

Topic Website - The Boy Scouts of America

For this assignment, I was tasked to create a website on a topic that I was interested in. I chose to make mine on the history of the Boy Scouts of America. I used a template that we had made before to start. Then I put in the content and changed the colors to match the content. This was our second "full" website, with multiple pages, so it helped me to understand more how to use dreamweaver to create what I need. If I were to do something differently, I would figure out how to make my sidebar to touch the footer on every page. Something I would the same was the color pallet that looked good in the finished project. For the next project, I will definitely use the same website for color pallets.

What Makes a Good Feature Story?

A good feature story has to tell a compelling story that people can relate to. The feature story that won the honor of being featured on ONW NOW had a lot of elements that made it so great. It utilized the six shot system, natural noises, had a great voice over, and had a good hook to catch the viewers attention. I will strive to implement these things into my later videos.

Video and Written Reflection-

For our feature story, we created both a video and written story. I interviewed Reece and George, two of my classmates. I asked Reece about the book that he is writing and asked George what he thought of student writing a book. For the video I used voice overs to transition from  topic to topic, using an app on my phone to record them. There were many differences between the video and written versions. For example, I had to cut out the ending of my video from the writer part. I also added a different ending to make it more relevant. In both, I started with a strong hook to draw people in.

For this project, I made a feature story with a primary and secondary interview. A feature story is different from a normal news story; a feature story focuses on the people and not the facts or the event. I interviewed a classmate, Reece, about the book that he is writing and asked George, another student, about what he thought of Reece as an author. This is different from my last video because in the other video the interview was the main part of the video. While in this one, my voiceover was the main structure of the video. This also was the most voiceover that I have ever recorded for a video. I am mostly proud of my finished product, although I would like to have had a more clear sounding voiceover.

Written Story-

For most students at ONW, writing is a boring but mandatory part of their english class. But for sophomore Reece Krall, it means something entirely different.

In his free time, Reece is writing his very own book about a “modern day vigilante” that focuses on real world struggles.

“I’m about three chapters in, and about to be on four. I’ve had the idea for about a year, but I’ve never actually sat down and started writing it till just about a month ago and from there it kind of just took off.”

He has even impressed some of his peers at school.

“I wish I could write a book” says George Smith, a classmate of Reece, “I feel like it will be a great experience”

Reece continues on about his hopes of finishing his book and why he is writing it.

“My greatest hope is that my book gets out there and actually sends a message to people.”

Most students wouldn’t think of doing a project this big, but Krall is committed. We’ll just have to wait and read it cover to cover when it’s complete.

Halloween Page

For the first project on my index page, I created a halloween page. When you click on the links, it opens the page in an "iframe" instead of opening it in a new tab. I also made a frame by frame jack-o'-lantern animation with photoshop to go along with the page. I learned how to make an iframe and I also built upon my knowledge of dreamweaver. Here is both the page and the jack-o'-lantern gif for your viewing pleasure.

Organizing Clips in Premiere Pro Tutorial - Video

For video class, we use the Adobe program Premiere Pro to edit our videos.  Sometimes the clips can get mixed up, so this is a tutorial on how to help organize them. I hope you find this useful!

An helpful tool for organizing is bins. Bins can be used to store offline clips for batch capture, store main sequences and backup sequences, and to organize files by type.

To add a bin, click the New Bin button at the bottom right of the Project panel, or use the keyboard shortcut Control+/ (Windows) or Command+/ (MacOS).

Labels-

You can label bins with colors to limit confusion.

• To assign a label, click Edit > Label > ann choose a color.
• To select all bins with the same label, select a labeled bin and click Edit > Label > Select Label Group.
• To edit names of labels, click Premiere Pro > Preferences > Label Defaults. 

Tips-

Here are a few handy tips to help.

• Once you add a bin, you can drag and drop your clips into them for easy access.
• To see the clips inside of the bins in a list, double-click the bin to expand it, or click the triangle beside the bin icon.

Raven Vs. Crow - Web

This was the first website this year that we used Dreamweaver for. This project helped me to understand it and it's many features. It is a lot easier than writing straight code in TextMate. It is easier in particular to use css with the easy to use menu.

ONW: One in 2000 - Video

For my second video, I interviewed Jack Clayton about his summer. I learned that, over the summer, he played a lot of baseball and played even more baseball. I hadn't realized how much baseball he really played and how good his team is until this project

While shooting this video, I learned the 21 questions to ask during an interview. I also learned a lot about how interviews are made in the professional world.

During the editing process, I gained a better understanding of Adobe Premiere. I now know that if you tell it to look for the clips in the SD card, then forget the card, you have to waist a day without your footage.

While creating the voiceover, I learned how the scripts are written for real voiceovers.  I also learned that it takes several tries to get one word to sound right.

I am very proud of how the overall flow of the video turned out. I wasn't sure about my skills before but now, with this project, I am more confident in myself.

The Eight Core Web Fonts and Hexadecimal Color Codes - Web

Recently, we have been going more in depth into the wonders of web design by creating two more websites with the application TextMate. We made a page for hexadecimal color codes and a page for the 8 core web fonts that are used in web. 

These projects helped me to understand and get familiar with writing the HTML by hand before we get to use Dreamweaver, which writes a lot of the code for you.

I used dividers (<div>) to create both the rainbow boxes and the boxes around the text on the font page.

Positive Values at ONW - Video

For our first project in video, we were tasked by Dr. Zuck to create a video that shows students how to act at school. I chose to show how to help people in a small but meaningful way. The first step was to story board what my partner and I wanted the video to look like. All though it was just stick figures, it helped us to under stand what we were going to shoot and to not waist time. Then, for the next two days, we shoot the video. The next few days were spent editing the video and adding the sound to create the final product. During the process of creating this video, I learned a great deal on how to operate the cameras and editing software that we hadn't used last year. For my next video I will try and shoot more different types of shots for B-role.

Then and Now - Web

With this project, the first of my sophomore year, I was tasked with using the wayback machine to look at how popular websites have evolved over the years in both look and code.

The famous logo and colors haven't changed much but YouTube has changed a lot over the years. It started out as a dating site and is now the largest video sharing platform in existence. On the surface, it has changed too many things to count . But if we look at the code we can see several changes. For example, they used tables to format everything and now they use containers.

On the surface, facebook has changed its overall color, design, and audience. The code hasn't changed much, but has become much more complicated overall.

Gregg Riess Photography became more modern and easier to understand. The code, on the other hand, has become drastically more complicated and does a lot more for the site. 

e9 Final Project

For our final project, we were placed into groups based on our personality. We all created a product that people would want. Through out fourth quarter, we created a video, an animation, a graphic, and a website for the product. My group, P.I.M.I.J., created The D.E.W. (Daily Eyebrow Waxer). With our DEW, you would never have to pay for an eyebrow waxing again.

My group worked well with doing each of our specialties. But we could of done better assigning jobs. If we were to do it again, we would use our time to make a better video. We have all improved in our focus areas.
